Knightley shuns focus on body, looks

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

British actress Keira Knightley has had enough of the media's fixation with her looks, weight and figure, and urged people to focus on her films instead.

In Venice to promote her latest movie Atonement, the 22-year-old star of the hit Pirates of the Caribbean franchise had to field questions about her curves during a news conference.

"It's really frustrating, and particularly when you come to Venice film festival with a film that is an intelligent film," she told Reuters in an interview. "It's a thought-provoking film you can have a really good discussion about.

"I think it was just a shame that that had to be brought up then, and the fact that we all knew that it was going to be brought up," she added, referring to the cast and crew of Atonement with her at the conference.

"We actually had a bet going. I was like 'Come on, how many times either anorexia or something about my body, are going to come up.'"

Knightley is the subject of constant tabloid press coverage of whether she is anorexic, what example she sets girls and young women and who she is linked with romantically.

"I think what I want to keep it about is the work, that's all I'm interested in, and when you've got a project like this I think it's a shame to take it away from that."

The actress, nominated for an Oscar in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice, has won early critical praise for her portrayal of Cecilia Tallis in Atonement, a film directed by Joe Wright and based on Ian McEwan's acclaimed novel.

Knightley said she was "really proud" of Atonement, her second collaboration with Wright after Pride and Prejudice.

But she said she is highly critical of her own work and finds it difficult watching herself on the big screen.

"I'm my worst critic," she said. "If you really want me to cut my part to pieces, I absolutely can and I don't want to get to a day when I can't."

She said that one of the attractions of playing Cecilia was Wright's decision to use speech patterns and acting styles similar to those in the 1930s and 1940s, the period in which most of the narrative is set.

"I think the 30s and 40s, (it is a) speech pattern that we've pretty much lost now.

Celebrity buzz priceless to nightclubs

Three years ago, as Paris Hilton was about to turn 21, she got a sense of her worth to the nightclub industry in Las Vegas.

Hilton had celebrated her previous three birthdays at Light, the Bellagio hotel-casino nightclub run by the Light Group. But for her 24th, another company swooped in with an offer that trumped the standard private jet to and from Los Angeles, a free stay at a luxury suite, a sumptuous dinner and, of course, free booze.

The hotel heiress would get a big paycheck - Light was told $US200,000 ($A245,624) - just to party, but it had to be at PURE, a rival nightclub at Caesars Palace run by the PURE Management Group.

Her people let the Light Group know that their former deal was off.

"We said, 'OK, well listen, we're not here to tell you not to make money,"' said a former Light executive, who did not want to be identified talking about industry specifics.

Celebrities often make appearances and walk the red carpet as part of the deal for coming to a nightclub. In return for generating media coverage, they receive all sorts of free goodies, if not cash. For nightclub operators, it has become the standard way of getting their establishments known.

Besides buzz, it generates more patrons, more people willing to pay a $US30 ($A36.84) cover charge, $US15 ($A18.42) for a cocktail and $US500 ($A614.06) for a bottle of name-brand vodka or champagne.

"If you quantify that in terms of the amount of press they got off it, the press they got off it was priceless," the former executive said.

This weekend, PURE is looking to re-create its formula with the opening of LAX and Noir nightclubs at the Luxor hotel-casino, with a grand-opening party Friday night hosted by Britney Spears. The company would not say how much it is paying her or whether Spears would perform.

A revamped club, Blush at the Wynn hotel-casino, also is hoping to cash in by opening Friday.

It is the start of a raucous couple of weeks that include Labor Day weekend and the MTV Video Music Awards - events that will attract plenty of partiers and paparazzi.

PURE managing partner Steve Davidovici said rumours of celebrity payments are exaggerated, and pointed to reports the group paid $US250,000 ($A307,031) to Spears eight months ago to host PURE's New Year's Eve countdown.

"That's a lot of sour grapes from other nightclubs, I guess," Davidovici said, while giving a tour of LAX, a plush club that resembles a chic 1920s opera house. "It's a third of those prices."

Even at that, the appearance fee, which works out to about $US83,000 ($A101,934.3) was money well spent, he said. The club sold a table next to Spears that night for $US50,000 ($A61,406.2), and some 3,000 revellers spent $US250 ($A307.03) on tickets.

"If you look at (the celeb fee) from a monetary standpoint, it's significant, but not if you're taking in half a million dollars," he said.

PURE nightclub alone will generate about $US53 million ($A65.09 million) in revenue this year, while the company plans to gross more than $US120 million ($A147.37 million) from its 12 venues in Las Vegas and the Bahamas, he said.

On Tuesday, PURE nightclub hosted Paris Hilton and her sister, Nicky, as they unveiled new products from Nicky's clothing line. The club later gushed in a release that the sisters "danced their hearts out for the admiring onlookers" as "the two socialites stuck to the main VIP stage."

At LAX, the central focus of the theatre-like layout is a raised dais of booths in front of the dance floor for "super VIPs and celebrities," Davidovici said.

"Britney will definitely be up there opening night," he said.

Industry observers say such celebrity-spotting is worth the price of admission.

"It's fun to be famous and rich. That's why people pay to get in and watch," said Lori Levine, the president of Flying Television, a talent-booking firm in New York.

"If you go to a club to see one of the 'It' girls, you take a photo on your phone and you'll have a story to tell for the rest of the summer," she said.

The pay scale for celebrity ranges from free drinks to thousands of dollars.

NBA stars command appearance fees from $US5,000 ($A6,140) to $US30,000 ($A36,843) and models can broker $US2,500 ($A3,070) to $US25,000 ($A30,703) "depending on whether she's been in Victoria's Secret or Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue," said Ryan Schinman, president of the entertainment consulting firm Platinum Rye Entertainment.

In exchange, the stars are obliged to do little more than shine.

"Be (listed) on the invite, pose for some pictures and call it a day," Schinman said.

For Blush's second weekend, it is hosting a "gifting suite" for rockers getting ready to take the stage for the September 9 MTV Video Music Awards. A list of up to 300 invitees includes Fergie, Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, 50 Cent, and U2.

Those who show up the day of the awards can get pampering from a barber and/or masseuse and will walk away with a gift bag stuffed with clothing, spa packages and jewellery.

"It's for them to come in, relax, enjoy themselves," said Blush marketing director Rosine Frangie, adding "there's going to be a small press wall (red carpet) inside."

Other than the requisite photo op, there are few rules for contracted talent appearances.

At Spears' New Year's Eve appearance at PURE, the new mother famously fell asleep around 1am and was helped out of the club, generating a barrage of scandalous internet gossip.

Some said it did not matter a whit.

"Clubs don't care about bad behaviour," said Steve Striker, the founder of trip organiser Striker VIP. "It creates media, good hype or bad."

Light Group managing partner Andy Masi says his company does not pay for appearances but will supply jets, suites, dinners and drinks for celebrities on special nights such as club anniversaries - with tabs often running into the thousands of dollars. The group generally makes celebrities pay when they visit on their own.

Masi said red carpets are set up for press when celebrities want to promote their own projects or for anniversary bashes when the club wants to show off who came.

But unscripted celebrity appearances at Light's 10 restaurants and clubs in Las Vegas can do a better job of generating interest, he said.

"Afterward, the buzz gets out. Someone you know, Leonardo DiCaprio, seen eating in STACK or Tobey Maguire seen at FIX restaurant or Kevin Connolly hanging out at Jet (nightclub)," he said. "That stuff comes out afterward, but we're not crafting the entire night and spending money to create that. It's just happening naturally."

Both Light and PURE say building relationships with the stars and giving them great service is key to getting them to return. Both approaches appear to be working.

Light is set to make from $US90 million ($A110.53 million) to $US120 million ($A147.37 million) in revenue this year, and is set to open four new venues and manage a hotel-condo tower in the new CityCenter, Masi said.

Davidovici said it takes more than just buzz to keep venues making money, though.

"You couldn't get 5,000 people three nights a week for three years to come if you didn't run a real establishment, if our doormen were rude to people and the cocktail waitresses weren't friendly," he said.

"It's more about the regular customer than the celebrity, because that person is spending money."

Fame, cushioning fall of troubled stars

Brief jail sentences this week for Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie have brought back the question of whether fame provides a soft landing for fallen stars.

On Thursday, Lohan got a one-day sentence for drunken driving and being under the influence of cocaine, and Richie served the better part of a four-day jail sentence for driving under the influence of drugs in 82 minutes.

She never saw the inside of a jail cell.

Were those slim punishments the benefit of fame? The answer is yes and no.

Their sentences were consistent with others that occur outside the spotlight, according to legal experts.

But high-priced lawyers helped them evade stronger punishment.

On the flip side, the cost was high in negative headlines, legal bills and career consequences.

An actress like Lohan, who had a thriving screen career before she was arrested, may have trouble being insured for future projects.

She is also spending time in yet another rehab facility and has admitted she has an addiction problem.

But the impact on others is what worries those involved in the legal system and the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.

"For the young kids, it sets a bad example," said Beverly Hills addiction specialist Marty Brenner.

"It says if I have enough money and a great lawyer I can get away with anything."

He suggested that all such offenders be sentenced to a 90-day rehabilitation program because anything shorter does not work.

Those within the legal system say Lohan and Richie were treated no differently from other drug and alcohol cases that make their way through the courts.

In Los Angeles County, jail overcrowding requires that Sheriff Lee Baca use the facilities he has for more serious offenders.

Baca wants inmates to serve their full sentences, Undersheriff Larry Waldie said , but "he does not want to go against what the judges want."

"He had no choice in this matter," Waldie said, adding that in addition to Richie, more than 50 women serving time on similar charges were released on Friday.

"The answer is there are too many bad girls and not enough cells," said Loyola University Law School professor Laurie Levenson.

"The scariest thing is that the secret is out that there is no deterrence ... Everyone in the system has known what's going on, that people don't serve much time for DUI. It's just a big surprise for the public."

She predicted others arrested for DUI are going to tell their lawyers: "I want the Lohan sentence."

Prosecutors may respond by overcharging crimes to enable judges to give longer sentences, Levenson said.

She noted that Lohan could have been charged with a felony, but her plea bargain involved only lesser misdemeanours.

Richie was a second offender charged with driving under the influence of drugs after motorists reported her driving the wrong way on a freeway.

She was arrested after being found stopped in a car pool lane, her vehicle facing the right way.

Both Lohan and Richie fared far better than Paris Hilton, who served some three weeks in jail for a probation violation after pleading no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving.

"Paris Hilton got hit hard by a judge who knew he could use her as an example," Levenson said.

Lawyer Harland Braun, who has represented celebrities on drug- and alcohol-related cases, said the public does not consider how much the stars have to lose.

If they are deemed uninsurable, they will lose acting roles.

"If the public gets tired of them, it could really hurt their careers," he said.

Drug-addled Doherty makes new rehab attempt

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Pete Doherty has checked himself back into rehab, finishing off a spectacular week of alleged attacks, side-stepped prison sentences and a cocaine kitty.

The Babyshambles front man has checked into Clouds Day, a $730-per-day clinic near Salisbury, two-and-a-half hours southwest of London.

The 28-year-old's latest attempt to dry-out follows an alleged attack against a photographer at a shopping centre.

Cath Mead claims Doherty kicked her and smashed her camera while she was photographing a model.

"A woman in her 20s has claimed she was assaulted by a man in the George Shopping centre at 3pm," a police spokesperson said this week.

"She wasn't seriously injured but it's believed damage was caused to the victim's camera. The incident is being investigated."

Doherty was arrested on Monday after he was allegedly found carrying drugs after performing at a music festival.

The singer subsequently walked free after police failed to bring him before a court for breaching his bail conditions within 24 hours.

Cocaine was detected in the bloodstream of a kitten belonging to drug-addled rocker Pete Doherty, reports said.

During his new rehab stint, Doherty will be able to flex his vocal chords by joining in the clinic's Friday night sing-a-long with a band called Mustard Seed, who put "recovery lyrics to popular music," according to the centre's site.

He'll also undertake "therapeutic duties" which consist of vacuuming the lounge and setting the table for dinner at the 38-bed-facility.

Britain's Daily Star reported that a kitten belonging to Doherty fell ill recently and was taken to a veterinary clinic.

The vet reportedly detected cocaine in kitten's bloodstream and had to call in the RSPCA, which subsequently reported the incident to the police.

The kitten was one of five recently born to Doherty's adult cat Dinger, who was named after a junkie slang term for a syringe, the report said.

Anorexic Moss

Friends of Kate Moss fear the model could be on downward anorexic spiral as she spends her days dieting on hot water and green leaves.

A gaggle of groupies from her British pad say Moss has "lost a half a stone over the past three weeks and is virtually not eating at all."

"Her skin is in a terrible state and her hair is ratty and unkempt," a source told the Daily Mail.

"Many of her close friends worry that she is too thin."

Her break-up with rocker Pete Doherty is the major reason for her downfall, alongside failed contract negotiations with Burberry and Agent Provocateur, the newspaper reports.

"Her professional and personal life hasn't been great of late and everyone has been telling Kate to put on a few pounds," the source said.

Revelations that Doherty may be back with his ex Irina Lazareanu — the same girl who Moss asked to model her Top Shop collection — have reportedly added to Moss's breakdown.

The Babyshambles front man checked into a rehab centre over the weekend, at a reported cost of $730-per-day.

Doherty was arrested last Monday after allegedly found carrying drugs after performing at a music festival.

The singer subsequently walked free after police failed to bring him before a court for breaching his bail conditions within 24 hours.

Nicole leaves jail after 82 minutes behind bars

Nicole Richie was released from a California jail after serving 82 minutes of a four-day sentence for driving under the influence of drugs.

The reality show star, who checked into jail in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood at 3.15pm on Friday, was released at 4.37pm "based on her sentence and federal guidelines," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Maribel Rizo said without elaborating.

When asked whether Richie spent her brief sentence in a jail cell, Rizo replied: "No further comment."

A call to Richie's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, was not immediately returned. An email message to publicist Nicole Perna was not immediately answered.

The brief jail stay took place at the county jail for women, the same place her The Simple Life co-star Paris Hilton was housed for nearly three weeks after she was convicted of driving on a suspended licence while on probation for an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Richie pleaded guilty in late July to a misdemeanour DUI charge in a deal with prosecutors that helped her avoid a potential year in jail on a second alcohol-related conviction in 2003.

She was arrested on December 11 after witnesses reported seeing her black Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle headed the wrong way on a freeway.

The California Highway Patrol said they found her parked in the car pool lane.

Richie told authorities she had smoked marijuana and taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin, a CHP officer said at the time.

No drugs were found on her or in the car.

The adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie, who is four months pregnant, had the option of serving 90 hours either in county jail or at any city jail.

Kate back with Pete?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Supermodel Kate Moss has reportedly rekindled her romance with troubled Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty.

Moss - who dumped Pete in June after he apparently cheated on her with South African model Lindi Hingston - is said to have spent five nights with the troubled rocker at exclusive London hotel Claridge's.

Sources claim Kate, who has just returned from a holiday in Spain, has been miserable since the split and has told the Babyshambles star she wants him back.

One told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "Kate has been like a moth to the flame. When she got back to Britain, they met up at the hotel. He cried and she cried.

"She said she had been avoiding him because she had promised everyone from her managers to her mother that she would. She told him, 'It's not me. It's just what they all made me do.' "

During one late-night heart-to heart, Kate told Pete she was "miserable without him and desperately happy with him."

News of the reconciliation has apparently devastated Kate's mum Linda as she thought her daughter was finally over Pete, who sold a story about his relationship with the 33-year-old beauty.

The source added: "Linda thought that once Pete spoke publicly about their relationship, there was no way back.

"But Pete has been telling Kate he was tricked and didn't know what he was doing. Kate is clearly smitten - she can't get the guy out of her system."

Kate - who has a four-year-old daughter, Lila Grace, from a previous relationship - began dating Pete in January 2005 after meeting him at her 31st birthday party.

Joel Madden to pop the question to Nicole Richie?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Joel Madden has something special in store for girlfriend Nicole Richie: “a little ring,” as Regis Philbin called it on live, national television Thursday morning.

Appearing with his band, Good Charlotte, on ABC’s Live! with Regis and Kelly, the musician, 28, was pressed about his personal life and Richie – who is 4 1/2 months pregnant with the couple’s child.

“You’re going to present her, maybe, with – did I hear the right thing, or should I not even talk about this?” said Philbin.

“Uh, what?” deadpanned Madden.

“A little ring, or something,” said Philbin.

“I was hoping it would be a surprise, but now –” answered Madden.

Madden’s reaction quickly forced Philbin spin on his heel and ask the frontman’s identical twin (and the band’s lead guitarist), Benji, whom he was dating.

But the cat was out of the bag.

In anticipation of becoming a father, Madden said he is reading the guidebooks What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Expectant Father and Baby Signs, which prompted the Live! guest host, Regis’s wife Joy Philbin, to say it is good he is taking his responsibilities seriously.

Earlier this month, Richie, 24, with Madden sitting at her side, told Diane Sawyer for a TV interview, “I would really want to be someone my child would look up to.”

For the record, Benji Madden said he’s not only dating “a beautiful Australian actress,” as Philbin called Sophie Monk, but, in Madden’s words, “Yes, we’re engaged.."

Strict Orders

Nicole Richie knows how rumors get started, so she’s nipping in the bud any chance of wicked whispers about her and boyfriend Joel Madden being on the outs. Wednesday night, Madden went to celebrate the first anniversary of the Village Pourhouse on Third Avenue, and all was well until a party promoter wanted to take a picture of him with a cute young woman. Our spy reports, “He said he couldn’t, as Nicole gave him strict orders not to take pictures with other celebrities or girls for rumor purposes.”

Lindsay's Rehab Schedule

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Lindsay Lohan must be having a rough time getting used to her new rehab schedule. A fellow patient named 'Jane P' has confirmed that Lohan did in fact check into the Cirque Lodge facility in Utah. The center is Mormon-run and has a fairly strict schedule:

Style Stalker: Gemma Ward

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Part of the reason we’re fans of Gemma Ward’s look because she rarely wears those instantly recognizable designer pieces. While this makes pinpointing her exact shirt for a story a wildly difficult task, it does lend itself to today’s story.

Ward-watchers know that Gemma has a few signature items she never leaves the house without. She’s a big fan of bags with long straps (worn over the shoulder or across-body), almost always wears a belt, and the majority of the time can be found in flats.

In the first look, Gemma spiced up a simple, single shoulder, black dress with one of fall’s most important accessories, the interlocking belt. Topshop’s red and gold elastic belt is an inexpensive and darling addition to anyone’s closet. A long strap, gold metallic bag and classic, black peep-toe heels complete the stalk.

The second look makes a strong argument against matchy-matchyness. Unlike some red carpet relics, Gemma mashes tan, black, and gray accessories to great effect. The proportions of the dress are exactly right—the long sleeves balance the short hemline and bright color. As for shoes, while there are lots of cap-toe shoes this season, we liked the soft color and black accents of the pair above. If you simply must have a flat with a black patent leather toe, head to Steve Madden’s website where you can custom design a pair for under $100. We created a classic low heel (AKA round-toe flat) in tan nubuck with black patent leather trim and cap-toe that’s beyond cute. Doing it ourselves is quite fun! Click here to design your own!

Is Lindsay a victim of abuse?

Lindsay Lohan's former bodyguard has claimed the starlet was the victim of abuse from her father.

Tony Almeida claims Lohan's father Michael once slammed the car brakes on and ripped her out of the car when he became annoyed with his daughter's whingeing.

"He pushed her up on the hood, screamed at her and called her a slut," Tony Almeida told US magazine In Touch.

"I got in the middle of it and pulled him off."

In response to the claims, Mr Lohan told In Touch magazine: "If I did do it, if that’s the worst anyone can say about me, then it’s not too bad."

Almeida claims it's Lohan's parents who are to blame for her behaviour.

"Lindsay was a very sweet and talented kid, but she didn’t stand a chance against her parents and the Hollywood system," he said.

Meanwhile, Lohan has been served with a lawsuit by the passenger in the car she allegedly chased down.

Tracie Rice is suing Lohan for negligence, assault and medical expenses.

Rice alleges she and the driver of the car were so terrified they crashed through a barricade to try and escape the starlet's pursuit.

She says they then drove to a police station and leapt out of the car, with Lohan right behind them as they ran to the officers.

"Police officers approached all of them with guns drawn," the suit said.

Lohan was subsequently found to be drunk and in possession of cocaine, leading to her latest stint in rehab.

Lindsay splashes out in rehab, again

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has committed herself to rehab — at a reported cost of $36,000 a month.

The 21-year-old has checked herself into Cirque Lodge, which overlooks Robert Redford's Sundance ski resort in Utah, a relative told The Daily Mail.

The starlet is facing charges for possession of cocaine, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended licence.

During her stint at Cirque Lodge, Lohan must attend daily 12-step programs, scrub bathroom floors, wash dirty dishes and do laundry.

But it seems even the most mundane chores are compensated by luxurious treatments that the lodge has to offer.

As well as detox, clients receive complimentary haircuts, manicures and pedicures.

Fireplaces and spa baths are features of the bedrooms and residents have full access to the lodge's gym and sauna.

If they get sick of that, they can take advantage of the hand-crafted staircase to view the spectacular mountain panorama.

Lohan's day reportedly ends with her watching movies on a massive plasma screen in a plush media room.

Lodge founder Richard Losse defended the luxurious program provided.

"The breakthrough that leads to recovery often happens during a hike, working with a horse or while luxuriating in bed," he said.

"I don't care where it happens, I just want it to happen. We don't fix anybody. All we do is provide tools and opportunities they need to stay sober.

"I'm more passionate about this business than anything else I've been involved in."

Lohan is due to appear in court on August 24.

Is Joel the daddy?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The National Enquirer has been claiming that Joel Madden may not be the baby’s daddy of Nicole Richie’s baby. The paper says that there were four guys in Nicole’s life before she discovered that she was pregnant.

A source said, “Nicole recently underwent a series of tests, including blood and urine screenings, which confirmed she is pregnant.”

The source also alleges that Nicole will be taking paternity tests to find out if Joel is the father.

Quote from bricksandstonesgossip.com

"I’m curious to know who else could be the daddy? My initial guess was that it would be some coked-out-almost-homeless “celeb” but then I came to my senses. This is Nicole Richie we are talking about, the guy could be any dude off the street: a junkie, a wino, a Chippendale’s dancer, who knows? Hell the dad could even be a dog…I have heard Nicole is into that stuff."

Free - for now

Singer Pete Doherty, the on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss, was told he faced a jail sentence next month if he failed to demonstrate he was trying to kick his drugs habit.

At a London court hearing, district Judge Davinder Lachlar told Doherty she was adjourning sentencing for a series of drugs offences until another hearing in four weeks' time.

"What I have in mind is a community order or prison," Lachlar said at West London Magistrates' Court.

"If he does not show the motivation in four weeks', it will be prison - it's as simple as that."

She told Doherty's lawyer Sean Curran that a financial penalty was a "totally unrealistic suggestion".

The Babyshambles singer, dressed in a black jacket and white shirt, told the judge he understood her instructions.

Lachlar had ordered Doherty, 28, to undergo detox treatment at a hearing last month.

On Tuesday, she gave credit to Doherty for attending rehab, but said it was "early days" as he had only been receiving treatment for about a week.

The court heard that Doherty, who fanned himself with his trademark trilby hat during the hearing, still showed signs of drugs in his system.

Lachlar granted Doherty bail until September 4.

Doherty pleaded guilty in July to possessing quantities of crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine. He had also pleaded guilty to two driving offences.

Former Laguna star pleads guilty to DUI

Jessica Smith, a former cast member of MTV’s “Laguna Beach: The real Orange County,” received three years probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge, prosecutors said Thursday.

Smith’s attorney entered the plea on her behalf Monday without her appearing, said Orange County district attorney’s spokeswoman Susan Schroeder. She was also ordered to perform 80 hours of community service and pay $1,300 in fines and penalties.

Smith, 19, was arrested in March for investigation of felony driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing a Volkswagen Beetle into another car on the San Diego Freeway, according to a California Highway Patrol report. The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries as did a passenger in the car driven by Smith, the report said. Although Smith was arrested for investigation of felony DUI, the charge was lessened to a misdemeanor because the injuries were not serious, officials said.

Lindsay for Elle Magazine

Lindsay Lohan is on the September 2007 cover for Elle Magazine. The interview took place 36 hours before her arrest in May on suspicion of her DUI.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

On her January rehab stint: “I was glad I went, because I needed to get away from everyone. … And I learned a lot there.”

On saying “I’ll never do …”: “You’re setting yourself up for a disaster. I never say never.”

On her drunk driving: “They’re looking for me, to like trip, so they can be like, ‘Oh Lindsay’s wasted and driving drunk.’ And that’s not it. I wouldn’t violate. … I’m much more responsible than that.”

On who takes care of her: “Jenni (Munro, one of her assistants), my mom and Leslie (Sloane-Zelnick, her publicist).”

On her relationship with British model Calum Best: “I like him. He’s me in male form. We’re very similar. Stubborn, rebellious, very smart, coy, a little bit narcissistic – I think all actors have a little bit of that, and so they should. We’ll be kidding around, like the other day when we were in the Bahamas … I was walking by some mirror. And he caught me looking in the mirror and he goes, ‘I caught that!’ I was like, ‘Damn, I look good!’”

On avoiding paparazzi: “I hate it, like, when these people say, ‘Well, why do you go to the Ivy if you don’t want …’ Seriously, I like their food! I can’t go to a restaurant? I know I’m going to get pictures taken. I’m fine with it. And I’m going to go have their food. People give you shit for it: ‘Don’t go on Robertson!’ What, I can’t drive down the street?”

On whom she relates to in Hollywood: “Ann-Margret. Marilyn Monroe. … Marilyn exudes sex appeal. She was such an innocent sort. … That was the tragic side of it.”

On the timepiece she wore for the photo shoot: “I wanted everything. There was this Cartier watch, and I was like, ‘What do I have to do to get this watch?’ ”

'Apparently' Louis Vuitton hates Lindsay because she reportedly swiped several LV items during the shoot. According to Page Six…

“Louis Vuitton had sent over some samples for her to wear in the shoot. Lindsay, kept shoving the clothes into her bag, and a stylist’s assistant kept getting them out of the bag, only to have Lindsay keep trying to take them. She ended up walking off with a very expensive shirt and some other items - which screwed Louis Vuitton because they were set to go to Vogue, W and Harper’s Bazaar for other shoots. They were furious and kept trying to get their clothes back, but... Lindsay walked out with them and never returned calls.”

Nicole is 'playing by the rules'

Nicole Richie wants the world to know that she’s “playing by the rules” during her pregnancy. That includes cutting out caffeine, sushi, drugs, alcohol, and adding some extra pounds.

In part two of her interview on ABC’s Good Morning America, Richie tells Diane Sawyer that she’s prepared for the weight gain that comes with being pregnant.

"It's what my baby needs and to me, numbers don't mean anything. If I gain 40 pounds, if I gain 50 pounds, then that's obviously what my body needs to do. I'm totally OK with that," she says.

In fact, the four-months pregnant former reality star has already added 10 pounds to her slender frame.

"I eat all the time, especially now. I'm constantly hungry. I'm eating at least every hour," she says. "And just like any mother, you want to take the best care of yourself, especially while you're pregnant. I'm definitely eating healthier now."

However, Richie, 25, continues to deny that she ever suffered from an eating disorder.

"No, I do not have an eating disorder. I've never had an eating disorder, ever," Richie said. "It's anxiety, it's stress, it's just — it's just not being careful."

When asked by Sawyer if the weight loss was drug related, Richie says, "I think it possibly could have been."

She then apologized for any negative messages her thin body may have sent to impressionable young girls with body image issues. She said that, before, she hadn’t been ready to accept the responsibility that comes with being a public figure and role model.

"I'm really sorry for not accepting that earlier. It just — it took me a while."

Boyfriend Joel Madden of Good Charlotte has also dropped a few bad habits of his own.

"I had to quit smoking and I was a smoker, a pack and a half a day. That was hard. That was a rough week," Madden says.

Richie, who is due in five months, says she’s looking forward to being a role model for young girls.

"I'm here now and you know I can only control the future. I can't change the past. And you know, I plan to live a very healthy and respectable life and be a good example for little girls that are looking up to me."

Lily Allen causing trouble in Melbourne

British pop star Lily Allen allegedly kicked a photographer at Melbourne airport on Wednesday night.

A pictorial agency issued an email yesterday with photos taken by a freelance paparazzi who claimed he was attacked by the singer.

Lily Allen hid and actually kicked the photographer who asked her for just one photo", the email read, as quoted in the Daily Telegraph.

Allen has been previously labelled a wild child by British press, but the authenticity of the agency's claim is in dispute.

None of the images attached suggested violence, and the photos were withdrawn from sale with no explanation later the same day.

Her tour representative insisted it was the photographer who had a problem.
